Soulquarius x Preview
When the inaugural Soulquarius festival was unveiled recenrly, it sent a generation of R&B fans into pandemonium. Its lineup boasted so many of the acts that have defined the last quarter century of the genre that it seemed too good to be true. Nearly every era of R&B is represented — from new jack swing and the genre’s 90s golden age to neo-soul, hip-hop soul and current alternative exlorations. Here’s a quick preview of some of the artists that’ll be performing.
The Dream, or Terius Youngdell Nash is an American Rapper singer, songwriter, and record producer. His co-writing credits include songs with Dear Jayne, “Me Against the Music” (2003) for Britney Spears, “Umbrella” (2007) for Rihanna, “Single Ladies (Put a ring on it)” (2008) for Beyonce and “Baby” (2010) for Justin Bieber. Nash was born in Rockingham, North Carolina, and he first learned how to play an instrument in elementary school– he then moved on to playing the drums and guitar. When his mother passed away, Nash was fifteen years old, and this tragedy inspired who is now “The-Dream”, to write songs and make music. He claimed the death of his mother gave him a ‘soft spot’ for women,to which he credits his desire to write songs about female empowerment such as Rihanna’s “Umbrella”. This marvelous RnB artist is also known for some of his hit singles like “Rockin’ that thang”, or “Shawdy is a ten”. One of the Dream’s first hit single “Shawdy is a ten” came out 7 years ago… feeling old yet? If you were a fan of any of The Dream’s work, make your dreams come true by coming to Soulquarius, where this notorious music artist will be performing.
Pretty Ricky Ricky Ricky… where were you all at? Well, popping out for Soulquarius in 2017. Pretty Ricky is an American RnB and Hip Hop group that had originated from the east coasts of Miami, Florida. Pretty Ricky originally consisted of four brothers: Corey “Slick’em Mathis, Ala Diamond “Baby Blue Smith, “Spectacular” Blue Smith, and Marcus “Pleasure P” Cooper who was the group’s only singer since the rest of them claimed to had taken roles as rappers. They all have the same father, Joseph “Blue” Smith Sr., but only Spectacular and Baby Blue have the same mother. The group’s name, “Pretty RIcky” was taken from a character in Martin Lawrence’s comedy series, Martin (1992-1997) because all the individuals in the group claimed they all dressed differently from everyone else where they resided. On the show, there was a character named “Pretty Ricky”, Pleasure P explained this character was slick and always dressed different to everyone else, so all the girls from their school began to refer to the group as “Pretty Ricky”. This group had a huge success with their slow jammed RnB songs, like “Grind with Me” and “On the Hotline”. Though the group split, they have gotten back together in 2015, and will be releasing a final album, and performing their final tour, one stop including #Soulquarius2017.
