Petaluma

Petaluma is an American music group from Sacramento, California, forming in December of 2016. The band members include David Baez-Lopez (synth), Melissa Garcia (drums), Robert Habel (vocals, guitar, synths), Pat Sweeny (bass/guitar/percussion), and Ty Marshall (guitar). The band name was inspired by what was the base of the Sonoma Mountains, east of what is now called the Petaluma River. In context, the Petaluma’s were an indigenous group, specifically of the Coastal Miwok’s. The Petaluma people had their own distinctive language that actually went extinct. Petaluma means “back side of mountain” in the native language- that is the best translation obtainable. It seems likely that this refers to Sonoma Mountain, with its long, nearly level summit ridge rising behind the village. Petaluma may have a simple meaning, but it provides a glimpse of what other human beings noticed long ago.
The people of Sonoma County has changed dramatically over the past two centuries, and the village of Petaluma has been replaced by a modern city. But the name and the flat-backed ridge of Sonoma Mountain remain, as enduring as the North Star. Just like the intricacy and very details of what is so simple and beautiful, Rob shared his reasons of the band name “Petaluma”. Petaluma is something that is arcade to Rob and his band members. Petaluma is the nostalgic nature within humanity, and the love that is closely attached to the forces of positivity.

The shift of civilization and modern technologies have contributed to the shift of consciousness. The focus of modernized societies including capitalism and systemic issues have also contributed to a destructive conditioning of the minds. With these toxic, and artificial changes to our systems, humans tend to normalize behaviors such as materialism, lacking the appreciation for the Earth, and communicating from a place of fear, and closed minded-ness.
Positivity roots from loving one-self, and that may be reached through an array of mediums. Petaluma creates that space and unity through (he)art, and their love of music. Petaluma is illuminating their messages through creativity, and their creativity is evident through the music they produce. Their genre is indefinable, and we are coming into an age where genres of music are influenced from multiple sources and influences. Some of their inspirations of music are the vibes of electronica, ambient, indie, dark, dreamy, dance, psychedelic and (absolutely) experimental sounds. Petaluma was formed in Sacramento, but the band members have branched out from other parts of the map. Melissa, was raised throughout SoCal, including Long Beach, Riverside, and Orange County. David was born and raised in Mexico City, Mexico, and moved out to the states (Sacramento) in ‘97. Rob is a Sacramento native, specifically in the Auburn area. Even with their different walks of life, the power of musical influences have pulled these members together; an example of a huge musical influence being David Bowie, the band agreed that Bowie had a “Shakespearian” approach to music. He was referred to as a childhood hero to Petaluma. Some other influences include Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead.
With the tone of dark, dreamy, moon like vibes, we touched on topic of dissociation and maladaptive daydreaming. Petaluma has used art, and the art of music to cope with micro-aggressions towards one-self and those haunting thoughts that have blinded the members vision from time to time. It was said that it was these darker, insidious moments of life that have helped create an even more powerful impact on the musical journey Petaluma is currently riding. The process of music is healing, and is a tool to undergo stages of blooming and light. Petaluma has grown both individually and collectively, and they will continue to reach for feelings of love and goodness through the magical ties of music, which initially brings the people together, right?
