FYF Fest

FYF Fest — Preview Edition

It is all wrapped up in one neat little package — the absolute must see’s — the you’d-be-crazy-to-miss — the seriously-how-did-you-not-catch-this-set?!? — preview for FYF Fest 2017

Bjork. I repeat. Muthafkn Bjork. If you are even asking me why this is on the list, if you are even questioning it in your head, if you even had to think about it.. we need to talk.
Bjork has been blowing peoples brains back with her music since she was a very small child in Reykjavik. Never conforming to the social constructs placed upon her, the music she has created has become instrumental and vocal landscapes that you can lose yourself in. She creates dreamscapes with sound, and has also been consistently touted as one of the best live shows of the last 20 years. Featuring huge orchestral performances with jaw dropping visuals, this 60 minute set will be one to write home about. Or write a blog about… whatever.
I will be there Bjork. I swear. You fucking alien goddess, you.
Bjork is playing the Main Stage from 8:50pm to 10:05 pm

Yes. Yes. YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!! I have been dying to see this man live. Music in and of itself has taken a truly interesting, and experimental bend over the last ten years. Hip hop, jazz, soul, funk, and R&B have all merged with the electronic sensibilities and live instrumentation and somehow… they birthed Anderson Paak. His albums are equal parts good to dance to, smoke to and fuck to, so no matter what you choose to do (both at home, and at FYF Fest) it is a guarantee that Anderson and the Free Nationals will put you in the right kind of mood.
Anderson Paak & The Free Nationals are playing the Lawn Stage from 10:10 – 11:10pm

I am not sure that I should even have to explain WHY this is the ONE ABSOLUTE CANNOT-MISS show of Friday. Missy Elliot has basically been in her own private cocoon for ten years. If you think my ass is not going to be front and center to see her absolutely slay the Main stage Friday, than you are crazy. Missy Elliot has worked with some of the most INSANE stage-techs in the world, teams who have designed magic tricks for Criss Angel and Copperfield (I used to work for those guys) and stage shows for Justin Timberlake. Somehow Missy still manages to upstage all of them with her on-stage antics. This show will probably be no exception. Some weird shit is going to happen. My body is ready.

Missy is on the Main Stage. Friday, July 21st from 11:15pm to 12:15am

Showing up on the Lawn stage for what is sure to be some late night trippy-ness, Flying Lotus is going to be throwing down an hour long set of that weird, wild shit that he plays. One of the best parts of a Flying Lotus show is you never know who is going to show up with him. He’s featured everyone from K.Dot to Thom Yorke and all manner of in-between — and with Kendrick’s tour not starting until August — a bitch can pray he makes an appearance.

This is one of those… I might drop acid type sets. You know. For science.

Flying Lotus is playing the Lawn Stage, July 21st from 12:20am – 1:20 am

Here are the must-sees (for me) for Saturday at FYF.

This show is going to be a trip, for sure. Thundercat is a genre-bending magician on a bass guitar, who can also sing, produce, and make some crazy sounding music. I have never seen him live. I have to see him live. Does not matter that he will be playing at the HOTTEST time of the day in the middle of summer in California, does not matter that the sun will be crisping my skin like bacon on a griddle. It. Doesn’t. Matter. Not only has he created some of my favorite music in the last few years on his own, but he has been a part of so many projects that have been seminal for me recently. Vic Mensa’s The Innnanet, Childish Gambino’s Because, the Internet, basically all of Kendrick’s last three albums, plus Ms. Badu’s New Amerykah Part 1&2 and Kamasi Washington thrown in for a little spice…. Thundercat is everywhere, and for good damn reason.
Must. See. Thundercat.
Thundercat is playing the Lawn Stage from 5:30-6:25

Goddess. That’s the word that always pops up into my head when I head Noname uttered. I first heard her on Chance’s Acid Rap album, and I have been seeking out her music ever since. Coming from a slam poetry background, she has mastered the art of delivery and cadence, and constantly shifts her delivery style to make each song just a little different from the first. She reminds me of Chance a little in her style but that also may just be a Chicago thing, and there is nothing wrong with it. I love Chance, and I love Noname. She gives an exuberance and energy that you don’t see very often in hip hop and coming from a female perspective, it is even more refreshing, and her live show matches that.
Also… while writing this article I discovered that I have a friend who did a song with Noname, and I never knew until this exact moment. Small ass world.
Noname is playing the Trees Stage from 6:20-7:05pm

I’m not even writing anything. You know the fuck why.
It’s ATCQ.
There are no other words need be said.
This could be a life changing sort of set.

A Tribe Called Quest plays the Main Stage from 8:30-9:45pm

If Noname is a goddess, Badu is the Queen of all the Goddesses. Badu is who made me believe in magic. In the power of love. In the power of being in touch with who the fuck you were and not given a damn if people looked at you like you were crazy. This is a woman who has been rocking mics since I was in high school, and I have never heard music from her I did not like. She basically invented that Neo-Soul that everyone has been messing with recently. She released an album in 1998 that changed the musical landscape, and here I am, 20 years later feeling like a fan-girl just at the thought of seeing her in front of me. It’s like catching a leprechaun.

Erykah Badu is playing the Lawn Stage from 9:50-10:50pm

Sweet Christmas.
Ok Frank Ocean is the first man to give me honest-to-Goddess trust issues when it came to music. This man dropped a damn near life changing album for me in terms of how I felt about R&B. I was never the biggest fan, unless I just happened to be in love at the moment, or was about to get laid – both of these reasons give R&B a very real purpose in the musical world. For my own self though, the lovey-dovey was not really my drug of choice in the musical spectrum. Though there were definitely some meanderings into the love realm (Erykah being one of them) it just never really stuck with me.
Then I met Frank.
Frank changed errything with his first mixtape back in 2011 – nostalgia, Ultra. I have played this album so many times I could guarantee that if it had been a physical copy, I would have worn it down and had to purchase another one. I was almost afraid to hear his next album after this, because it seemed like a hard mountain to climb to get better than nostalgia.
Then he dropped muthafkn Channel Orange a year letter, and smacked me in the face with my own doubt. My body wasn’t ready. I played this shit to death, brought it back to life, and then played it to death again. I was ready for another immediately.
Five years of straight up fuckery, where he would taunt, tease, hint, and whisper about a new album. He would announce release dates for new albums. He would promote a new album – and then not shit would happen. NOT SHIT. No new music. No new songs. NOTHING. I just kept believing though. I kept believing that he would appear.
Now, one new album, and three new singles later – the only musician to actually toy with my heart is going to be standing in front of me in all his glory, singing out his soul.
I say this now – I could miss the entire rest of FYF Fest on Saturday. Every single person. As long as I see Frank, it will make the 6 hour drive, huge parking hassle, exorbitant amount of money I plan on spending on frivolities and weed and missing a day of work completely worth it.
Frank Ocean is playing the Main Stage from 11:20-12:20 am – which means you know where I will be.

And last… but certainly not least.

I fell in love with these guys the minute I heard their name. First off, I am Chicana and second of all, I love Batman, so these guys were speaking to me from the very beginning. With a melding of psychedelia, old 70s funk, soul and tropicalia, they have managed to put together a discography that harkens back to a time of free love, yet somehow infused with a message of consciousness, especially on their latest album Freedom is Free. Unfortunately, these guys have come to Sacramento a couple times, and I have yet to see them, so I refuse to sit idly by and let them play FYF Fest without me checking out the set.
Plus, their set starts at my favorite part of the day #420
Chicano Batman is playing on the Lawn Stage from 4:20-5:05pm

I’m only here for the turn up. I have been peeping out tried-and-true favorites throughout most of this show, and I need to expand my brain a little and have some good old fashioned, twerk-it-out fun. Something tells me Joey Purp provides.
Joey Purp is playing the Club Stage from 5:45-630pm

I cannot wait for this man to drop a full album. His voice is mellifluous. His style is not quite like anything, and yet is somehow everything. This man sings passion, and pain, heartbreak, and joy in ways that I have yet to truly be able to articulate. I cannot tell you what it is about this man that brings me such immense joy, but there is magic in him.
It isn’t even just his music, somehow this man has even turned his IG into a living embodiment of his art, and from my understanding, he tends to translate a lot of his art into his live show.
I cannot wait to see him. Moses Sumney should be on your radar immediately, and you should not take him off of it… He is up on the list with Frank for me in the sense that there is no way I will miss this set. You shouldn’t either, you will more than likely be all types of heartbroken, and I hate having to say I told you so.
Ok. No I don’t. I don’t mind it at all. Don’t make me do it, though.
Moses Sumney is playing the Club Stage from 700-745pm

I have not seen him live.
He will not be around forever.
The only problem is he is playing at the same time as Moses Sumney – so there are only two options, miss part of Iggy’s set, or miss part of Moses’ set. This is the Sophie’s choice I had to make, and I decided that I would miss the first twenty minutes of Iggy, because he has an hour long set, and I think he will forgive me.

Iggy Pop is playing the Lawn Stage from 7:20-8:20pm

Confession time, I have never been a huge fan of Beyonce, but her sister has always impressed the hell out of me. If it weren’t for Lemonade, I would still be pretty “meh” about her, and Lemonade without the visuals is like… well… actual lemonade with sugar. It quenches your thirst, but it sure as hell does not taste as good.
Solange on the other hand, is my heir apparent for when Badu finally decides to leave the spotlight, as she has been delving into the goddess realm for a while. She decided to come out and drop a bomb in 2016 with her release A Seat at the Table, and to this day I STILL have it in heavy rotation. Equal parts melodic, powerful, and absolutely on-message for today’s times, Solange released a true masterpiece that illustrated the power behind her voice, her music, and her spirit. She has spent her time since the release travelling the world performing, even claiming the Guggenheim as her own showroom turning the Frank Lloyd Wright museum into a performance hall for one night that many fans will never forget. The show itself included a suggested dress code and strict no cell phone policy as a part of the night’s proceedings.
Her FYF performance is going to be epic. I sense it. Though, my guess is we will be able to keep our phones.
Solange is playing the Main Stage from 825-925pm

So I had sort of missed out on this guy for a while, and happened to stumble on his music on Spotify when he showed up in the “suggested just for you” category.
Sometimes these streaming services get things so wrong that I often wonder what their algorithms are based on – but 6LACK was definitely not one the Spotfiy gawds got wrong. I seriously have not been able to get enough of his debut album Free 6lack. With his music he has managed to do something that, in my humble opinion, is one of the more difficult things in music – he melds genres with such a fluidity that I can’t really figure out how he manages to do it. 6LACK is what Drake wanted to be, but couldn’t quite pull off. He has the right mix of turn up, turn down, hip hop, trap, r&b and some weird electro mixed in, that it makes it so I am not 100 percent sure what category to put him in.
What I do know that he killed the leg of the tour that he was on with The Weeknd, and I anticipate him on everyone’s radars very soon, if he isn’t already. I will miss a few minutes of his set, unfortunately, because of Solange, so someone go and tell me how the first 15 minutes are.
6lack is playing the Trees Stage from 9:10-10:00pm

What kind of fuckery is this. WHO THE HELL PUT 6LACK AND RUN THE JEWELS AT THE SAME DAMN TIME?!?!?!??!!?!?!??!?!?!? Fuuuuuuuuuuuucking hell.
Run the Jewels is one of my all times. They are like the 2010s version of Rage Against the Machine, which makes the inner 14 year old in me happier beyond measure. There is nothing quite as empowering as listening to RTJ when you are marching at a protest rally, there is nothing like RTJ when you are angry at society and there is nothing like RTJ blasting non-stop when your current president happens to be an orange faced shit-gibbon. They inspire that anger and rage that can be channeled into progress, and I heavily fuck with that.
Luckily, I heard that scientists just figured out how to transport things into space, so hopefully by FYF the technology will be there for me to see two shows at once.
For real, who did this…?
Run The Jewels will be on the Lawn Stage from 935-1035pm

Trent Reznor is ALIVE? I want proof. FYF is offering it apparently, in the form of a live show from the guys that I lovingly remember from my youth. Their sound is dark, synthy, crunchy, and is surprisingly good to have raunchy sex to… I mean. I have been told.
Having just released new music, I am curious to see what it is in store for their live show, and I have never seen them live, and I would be pretty pissed at myself if I had the chance and missed them.

NIN is closing out FYF Fest, playing the longest set of the festival – on the Main Stage from 10:45-12:15am

1. FYF Fest is going to be fucking insane
2. Friday is going to be one fucking amazing night of music
4. I will be running my chubby ass back and forth between the Lawn and Main stages non-stop from 8pm til Midnight. Lord I hope they are close to each other. LOL.

1. Water
2. Weed
3. Wraps

Welp. That’s it guys! The must-see of FYF Fest from yours truly.
See you soon, So Cal.
