Sobroso Festival 2018

The Sobroso Festival was an all day event with a variety of leisure for everyone. For the first four hours, everyone was enjoying craft beer tastings featuring over 100 craft beers, including some of the best local favorites. There were also many taco food trucks and fans were grubbing. The carne asada, carnitas, and chicken tacos looked delicious and everyone was having a good time.

Not only were there beers and tacos, there was Top Lucha Libre style wrestling stars from across the globe who took the ring battling for the title of Sabroso Champion. There were multiple qualifying wrestling matches throughout the day.

Did I mention there’s music too?

Mexican Ska Punk band Los Kung Fu Monkeys started off the festival at 2:00pm with fast paced rhythms and drums. Many fans were dancing and feeling the vibe. Los Kung Fu Monkeys only had a 30 minute set but fans wanted more.

After, Wrestling fans started to gather around the lucha Libre ring. It was located on the left side of the main stage. Different wrestlers came in the ring and took turns standing on the ropes to hear cheers and boos. Shortly after the introductions, the Lucha Libre wrestlers began to battle. After the wrestling matches were over, fans walked back to the main stage.

Unwritten Law

Alright, let’s go back to the music. San Diego Ska punk band Unwritten Law played next and lead singer Scott Russo shouted gave shout outs to the crowd. Unwritten Law were refreshing and continued off the ska punk music. Mosh pits were starting to form and fans began pushing each other. The faster and louder Unwritten Law played, the crazier the mosh pit became.

After Unwritten Law finished their set, fans rushed in line to try a few more craft beers before the sampling ended.

The Vandals

Next up were The Vandals. The punk rock band from Huntington Beach started off with “It’s a fact” followed by “Johnny Two Bags.” During their set, lead singer Dave Quackenbush cracked a few jokes and guitarist Warren Fitzgerald stood on the speakers and jammed out while dancing.

The music didn’t stop there. Me First & The Gimme Gimmes played soon after. The San Francisco punk rock band played many fast paced cover songs. Lead singer Spike Slawson had gold thread attached to his microphone. It was amazing to watch the crowd sing along hits like R. Kelly’s “I believe I can fly,” Gloria Gaynor’s “I will survive,” and Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline.”

Alright, the moment we’ve all been waiting for, the headliners.

Fans went crazy when Pennywise took stage! Pennywise began their set with “Wouldn’t it be nice” followed by “Can’t Believe It.” During the middle of the set, lead singer Jim Lindberg ask one of the photographers to use their camera. Lindberg was handed a canon camera in front of the stage and he immediately took pictures of the crowd. Lindberg asking to use a photographer’s camera during his set was unexpected, but was fun to watch. Pennywise finished their set with fan favorite, “Bro Hymn.”

Did you know the last time the final headliner hasn’t played in Sacramento since 2012? Their last show in Sacramento was Aftershock. That’s right, I’m talking about legendary punk rock band The Offspring!

Drummer Pete Parada walked to his drums, then Greg Kriesel to his bass. Shortly after Noodles grabbed his guitar and lead singer Dexter Holland took the stage! Fans went crazy as The Offspring began to play. The legendary band started off with “You’re gonna go far Kid,” followed by “Come Out and Play.” It was amazing to watch the lighting on the stage change different colors for each song. The Offspring finished the night with fan favorite “Self Esteem.”

The Sobroso Festival was an amazing experience and Sacramento can not wait to host it again.
