Jump Clubb Interview
Jump Clubb is an anonymous band from Berverly Hills. Their music is a mix of disco, dance, and electro. They are a band that chooses to do things their way, and I must say it seems to be working out quite well. I got to ask the group a few questions about why they are choose ot be anonymous and their latest project “The Love of No Dance.”
How did you guys get started making music together?
We’ve known each other all of our lives and have been making music for as long as we can remember. It only made sense to put this project together.
So tell me about your guys’ latest project.
The Love of No Dance was recorded over a 4 day marathon recording session in Beverly Hills. We were tired of thoughtless dance music and wanted people to think about what they were dancing to instead of being lead like robots. We wanted to create non-danceable dance music. So the combination of lo-fi vocals with disco/dance influenced music was born.
What inspired the concept of “The Love Of No Dance” video?
We wanted to link our musical concept with visual content and it made sense to offer abstract degraded video set to tracks from the record. The video is found footage that fit perfectly with our view on art, music, and culture. The dark, cavernous feel set against conflicting bright lights and energetic crowds seemed to bring out that concept perfectly. There was little editing done in the end.
Where was “The Love Of No Dance” video shot at?
Since it was found footage we are unaware of what the original intent or purpose of the video was. Or where it was shot for that matter.
Take me through your creative process.
Writing, recording, and completing music for us all happens fairly spontaneously in one room. We have a skeleton concept of what genre and message we’d like to create and work from that. Songs usually start with the music first and vocals last. Once we get a solid electronic base for the music, whether it be melody, percussive, etc., we build on it and start testing out lyrics, vocal melodies, etc. It’s part trial and error and party spontaneous combustion, If we spend too much time on a track then it usually gets trashed.
What are you guys hoping to accomplish with your music?
We’d like to continue to create and continue to not really care about how many people are listening. The music industry is shitting their pants right now about how they will survive and how the business is doomed. We’re here to give them a diaper and a bitch slap and tell them to shut the fuck up. No matter what happens, it’s not about selling records. It’s about us, the artists, and our passion to create. The business could end tomorrow but we could care less, we’d still be making records.
What would you say are some of your biggest musical inspirations are?
Anything created with a 303, 606, 808, or 909.
Tell me about why you guys choose to remain anonymous?
It’s a direct reflection of where we live. If you’ve spent a good amount of time in Beverly Hills than you know what we’re talking about. There are chartered tours of our neighborhoods with tourists taking pictures of our houses. There are people who live here that think the car they drive will boost their low self confidence. Everyone wants to be known here and the thought of being anonymous kills them inside. This is what we love. Being anonymous here fill a void that no one is trying to fill. A safe home for us to make our music.
Do you think staying anonymous effects the connection you have with fans?
Possibly. But we have no need to be personally connected to our fans. Sure, the music industry and latest technologies are focused on having a direct peer to peer or artist to fan relationship. But again, thats not what we’re here for. We appreciate our fans and they appreciate us for our music. We don’t ignore our fans, we just focus on what made them focus on us in the first place. There is no need for them to know more than that.
What drives you guys to create music?
The town we live in and an undeniable love for creating something from nothing.
What would you say is your guys’ proudest accomplishment thus far?
Learning the art of seduction.
How do you maintain the fusion of dance friendly music and lyrical tales of heartbreaks?
When you have a novel of stories, lyrical and musical, to choose from it comes naturally. Our influences have always been electronic music and our lives have given us plenty of heartbreaking experiences to pull from. It’s almost second nature
What’s your favorite thing about the music you guys make?
The world that is created between the music and the story. It’s different for everyone but we feel it ourselves and our fans have felt it as well. A whole new context to base your motives, your likes and dislikes, your life experiences, and your passions on. The event horizon that is born and dies with each song. This happens with every piece of music that is created and listened to and we are happy to contribute.
For most musicians getting out on tours and playing your music to the masses it a dream come true, if you hadn’t made it as a musician, what do you think your other calling would have been?
A chef, an astronomer, a teacher, or a full (life) time student.
What can we expect from you for the rest of 2009 and 2010?
2009 will see a new single release and possibly a few free goodies including videos, covers, and remixes. 2010 will see the release of a brand new full length that we are set to start recording very shortly.
