Road to Northern Nights

Hello MashUp readers! We are getting close to our SEVENTH annual Northern Nights Music Festival!! It’s finally NNMF month- we are seeping into the exciting journey which we have in store for us. Every third weekend of July, just off the beaten path in the heart of Northern California’s Emerald Triangle, the Northern Nights Music Festival takes place in celebration of music, art, food, and cannabis culture. Entering its seventh year of operation, this year’s edition of Northern Nights takes place July 19th-21st, with underground hero ZHU, Smashing Pumpkins legendary “Noodles” other wise known as Kevin John, and Dirtybird’s very own Desert Hearts leading the bill amongst nearly a hundred diverse and fresh musicians and producers. This year also marks the first year (officially) of a collaboration between Northern Nights and seminal weed-gathering The Emerald Cup for what looks to be the largest and most elevated edition of the festival by far. The festival’s location along the South Fork Eel River, just three and a half hours north of the city, make this the perfect festival location for those looking to escape into a secluded paradise amidst towering Redwoods and plenty of new, like-minded friends.

Now, road to Northern Nights! Here is a brief description of three artists who will be featuring at NNMF this year! The range of musical sounds at NNMF is impeccable, and sure to be a myriad dynamic in style!

Steven Zhu is a Chinese-American musician and singer who has been active since the beginning of 2014, signed to Mind of a Genius Records.Until mid-2014, Zhu remained anonymous, asking to be judged by his music alone. His debut album, Generationwhy, was released on July 29, 2016. Zhu’s first track, “Moves Like Ms Jackson”, a mashup of several songs by Outkast, was released anonymously in February 2014 and was positively received by blogs and reviewers covering electronic music.

His debut EP, The Nightday, arrived in the spring of 2014. Included on the EP, his hit single “Faded” was nominated for a Grammy, a first for an anonymous artist. The following year, Zhu recruited an impressive roster of guests for the Genesis Series EP, which featured collaborations with Skrillex, Daniel Johns, Trombone Shorty, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, A-Trak, Keznamdi, Vancouver Sleep Clinic, AlunaGeorge, and labelmates Gallant and THEY. After embarking on his first headlining tour, which included a spot at Coachella, Zhu released the single “In the Morning” in 2016. A full-length expansion followed that September. Ringos Desert added guests such as Tame Impala, Tokimonsta, and Majid Jordan to the blissed-out house party.

Wondering why Berner might be featuring this year?.. You guessed it! Berner is a huge advocate for the cannabis move! Born Gilbert Milam Jr., he is a Mexican-American rapper with multiple albums that have charted on Billboard’s “Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums” chart. He signed with Wiz Khalifa’s label Taylor Gang in 2012 after previously starting his own label called Bern One Entertainment in 2007.Berner ran a marijuana club between the ages of 18 and 25. He opened several marijuana dispensaries and began producing a TV series called Marijuana Mania. Berner has associations with Wiz Khalifa, B-real, and Snoop Dogg- creating sounds such as his single, “Best Thang Smokin”.

Noodles (Micah Mahinay) is a 26 year old DJ based out of San Francisco, but now resides in Los Angeles CA. She was first exposed into the night life at age 16. Where she began sneaking into 21+ clubs to see her favorite DJs spin in the hottest clubs. In 2008 Micah discovered her fathers broken turntables and decided to get them repaired. She learned how to properly mix on vinyl records later transitioning into using Serato. Micah’s father had been DJing since the 80’s and made Micah learn to be an open format DJ. She started to practice scratching and mixing for hours after class in high school, then began to record her mixes and would upload them onto the internet.

Noodles brings the vibe of R&B classics, mixed with modern day rap, integrated with an electronic sound. In early 2014 an R&B singer who goes by “Kehlani” had approached Micah and asked her to be her tour DJ. Since then the 2 artists have been touring while hosting many after parties in different cities together.

These artists sound incredible, right!? It’s not too late to get your tickets now! At northernnights.org! Hurry while they last, you won’t want summertime FOMO now!! Here is the new set line up:
